The move is part of a long-running effort by Space Systems Command to reorganize acquisition programs along mission area lines, syncing up with the structure of the service's main operational arm, Space Operations Command.
The company also is providing a ground system for the sensors that could provide data about interference threats to users across the Defense Department and Intelligence Community, said Josh Hartman of GEOST's parent firm.
Onshoring and investment in military-specific semiconductors anchor a cornerstone of the defense industrial base.
"I like Dr. Griffin, but he should have come back to us and talked to us before he made that decision," complained Rep. Mike Rogers about funds for space-base sensors shifting to SDA.
Aerospace was able to build and test both sats within 16 months, and launch them after only 18 months -- a fraction of the average seven to eight years it traditionally has taken the service.
"This is not going to be helpful over on the Hill," one former congressional staffer said of SDA's $11 billion, five-year draft budget. "In fact, it could put the final nails in SDA's coffin."
